Westmoore’s Katelin Cherry once again showed why she was the preseason favorite to win a state title in Cross Country this year. After a subpar start to her senior season, Cherry won her first meet of the year last week at the Third Annual Oklahoma Runner Classic in Norman.
Cherry posted a 12 minute and seven second run to outlast Plainview’s Kaitlin Moore, who came in five seconds behind.
However, it was Plainview that won the meet with Westmoore finishing second, 10 points back at 43. Enid (84) was third, followed by NHS (111) and North (122).
The Jags Allex Tarr took fourth (12:29) and Taylor Painter finished ninth (12:35). Amy Ledbetter (12:59) and Iasha Keller (13:06) also finished in the top 20 to help the squad.
The Classic was scheduled to have been run in early September, but weather issues postponed the meet until Sept. 30.
Cherry followed up her Classic performance with another victory Saturday at Marlow. But this time she was battling her own teammates for first place as the Jaguars rolled thru the meet.
Cherry won with a time of 12:38. Tarr took second (12:43), Painter third (13:19), Keller fourth (13:19) and Ledbetter fifth (13:19).
Westmoore dominated the event with 15 points. The second place team, Edmond Santa Fe, was 85 points behind. Norman (109), Marlow (126), Altus (156), Moore (166) and Southmoore (187) finished in the top 10.
On the boy’s side, Westmoore’s Toby Bothwell was unable to keep up with Parker Bowles helped lead the NHS boys to their first team title of the season. Bowles won the event in 16:48, 13 seconds ahead Bothwell, who took second. No other Jaguar finished in the top 20.
NHS won with 58 points and Mustang came in second (65). Norman North (84), Ponca City (106) and Westmoore (132) rounded out the top five.
With Bowles not in the field Saturday, Bothwell won the Marlow meet handily. He posted a 17:54 to take first.
The Jaguars finished second overall (79) behind Edmond Santa Fe (21).
Westmoore will be back in action Friday at the Edmond Pre-State Meet. Then Tuesday the postseason begins with the Mid-State Conference meet.
