Moore High held its first baseball tournament of the summer over the weekend. With 10 teams from around the area on hand, the Lions were looking to defend their home park and walk away with their own championship.

However, it was Choctaw who won the tourney by defeating Westmoore 13-1 in Sunday’s championship game.

The Lions went 2-2 during the tourney. They knocked off Putnam City West 13-3 and beat down Southmoore 11-1.

“In both wins, we came out and hit the ball well,” MHS coach Ron Spitler said. “Everybody came out swinging the bats.”

However, in losses to Choctaw and Chickasha, Moore was unable to get the consistent plate action they needed.

“We were kind of up and down,” Spitler said. “We were kind of streaky.”

Against Choctaw, Spitler said his crew could never pick up its game to match Choctaw as they fell 10-2.

“They hit the ball well,” Spitler said. “And we came out flat. Good teams like to take advantage of that.”

Moore held a 6-0 leading heading to the sixth inning against Chickasha. But Lion hurler Cody Hudson could not hold the lead. Chickasha posted nine runs in the sixth and went on to win 9-6.

“Cody did a really good job,” Spitler said. “He just got a little tired at the end of the game and they got to him.”

Depending on the weather, the Lions will be back in tournament action this week in the Westmoore Tournament. The coaching staff wants the players to use what they have learned to play better at Westmoore.

“I just want them to look back on these 15 games and learn from their mistakes and from their accomplishments,” Spitler said.

However, in the end, everything they do during the summer is just to get them ready for next year.

“In the summer time you have different kids playing,” Spitler said. “You may not have the same lineup from game to game. We had three kids gone to the Sunbelt. Last week we had two gone. Summer is a good opportunity to play kids in different positions and see if they can produce. That way when school comes around, you have an idea of who can hit in what hole and play what positions.
