During the snow days my husband watched several baseball documentaries. One segment told the story behind the song, "Take Me Out To the Ball Game," written by Jack Norworth.

In 1908, while riding the subway in New York, he saw a sign that displayed the words, "Baseball Today -- Polo Grounds."

Polo Grounds was the name of the stadium used most by the New York Giants' baseball team.

The subway ride took 30 minutes and during this ride, Norworth penned the words to the song. At the time the song was written, he had never been to a baseball game.

He took the lyrics to composer Albert Von Tilzer, who wrote the popular tune and later that year became a number one hit.

In 1910 the song was played during baseball games and in 1958, when the 50th anniversary of the song rolled around, Major League Baseball gave Norworth a lifetime pass to get into any ballpark. Unfortunately, he passed away a year later.

In 2008 a commemorative stamp was created, honoring the song and the sport.

This week, a different old song kept popping into my mind. I've read a lot of articles about the glory of God recently, and how we should seek His glory in our lives. In most hymnals across the nation, you'll find the song, "It is Glory Just to Walk With Him," by Avis Burgeson.

"It is glory just to walk with Him. It is glory just to walk with Him whose blood has ransomed me. It is rapture for my soul each day, it is joy divine to feel Him near whe-e'er my path may be. Bless the Lord it's glory all the way."

Whether you're on your way to baseball's spring training, on a subway, or in the middle of a busy day, "It is Glory Just to Walk With Him."
